NetBox’s position as a network source of truth continues to grow, and as our user community expands, so does the demand for integrations with other essential platforms. Today, we’re excited to announce the Private Preview of our newest integration: a seamless connection between NetBox and VMware vCenter.
As one of the most widely adopted virtualization platforms, VMware vCenter plays a critical role in many IT ecosystems. Users have long sought better ways to unify their virtualization and network data within NetBox, and this integration answers that need. It provides teams with an easy way to keep clusters, hosts, virtual machines, networks, and IP addresses synchronized between NetBox and VMware vCenter, eliminating manual data entry and ensuring alignment across systems.
This integration embraces the concept of a “shared authority” model, which is becoming increasingly common in modern IT environments. In such systems, there isn’t a singular source of truth—instead, multiple authoritative systems coexist, sharing data in a way that feels natural and intuitive. For example, virtual machines may be created and managed in vCenter first, but their metadata and relationships (e.g., cluster and site associations) can be synchronized back to NetBox for accurate documentation. This integration allows teams to define workflows that reflect their organizational processes, making it easier to decide which system governs which data, without losing synchronization.
The NetBox vCenter integration has been evolving within the NetBox Labs Experimental stage, with valuable input from a small group of early users who’ve helped shape its direction. Now, by moving into Private Preview, we’re opening up access to more users who are eager to collaborate with us on refining the integration’s features and extending its use cases as we prepare for Public Preview and eventual General Availability in 2025.
This integration comes on the heels of other innovations from NetBox Labs, including the recently announced Proxmox and ServiceNow integrations. It exemplifies our mission to create a “big tent” ecosystem where NetBox integrates seamlessly with the platforms powering your infrastructure, enabling more cohesive and efficient workflows.
“The way we build products at NetBox Labs is rooted in collaboration with our users,” says Kris Beevers, CEO of NetBox Labs. “This vCenter integration highlights our ability to deliver meaningful solutions quickly when we have a clear problem to solve and engaged users to guide us. It’s a pattern we’re accelerating as we move into 2025.”
If you’re using NetBox and VMware vCenter and want to shape the future of this integration, we’d love for you to join the Private Preview. Please contact us at product@netboxlabs.com with your name, company, role, and a brief description of how tighter integration between NetBox and vCenter could improve your operations. We’ll prioritize applicants based on use cases.
We look forward to working together to refine this integration and make multi-system, shared authority IT operations more efficient and powerful, with NetBox.
