We’re excited to announce the general availability of NetBox 4.4, a release that represents our continued commitment to making network infrastructure management more intuitive, powerful, and scalable.

This latest version delivers significant operational efficiency improvements that directly address the daily workflows of network operations teams, while laying important groundwork for exciting developments across the broader NetBox ecosystem.

NetBox 4.4 is the culmination of months of community feedback translated into practical enhancements. From significant improvements to bulk operations performance to enhanced job logging capabilities, this release focuses squarely on operational efficiency and workflow improvements making NetBox more powerful for everyday use.

It’s worth noting that, in line with our new tick-tock release strategy, there are no breaking changes in this release.

What’s New in NetBox 4.4?

NetBox 4.4 introduces several important features designed to streamline network operations and improve user experience.

Background Jobs for Bulk Operations: Enhanced Large-Scale Management

NetBox 4.4 significantly improves how teams handle large-scale operations. Bulk imports, edits, and deletions can now execute as background jobs, freeing users to continue working while complex operations process. This enhancement eliminates the frustration of keeping browser sessions active during lengthy data imports and provides the flexibility to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Additionally, a new bulk rename capability has been added across all relevant models, streamlining the process of updating naming conventions at scale—a common requirement for network teams managing large, evolving infrastructures.

Advanced Job Logging: Enhanced Visibility into Operations

A dedicated logging mechanism provides persistent, structured logging that’s separate from job data. This new system includes granular log levels (debug, info, warning, error) with timestamps, making it significantly easier to troubleshoot automation workflows and understand what happened during complex operations. This foundation enables better monitoring and debugging of background processes, whether they’re bulk operations, custom scripts, or plugin-driven automation tasks.

Platform and Hardware Management Improvements

NetBox 4.4 addresses several important modeling enhancements. Platforms can now share the same name across different manufacturers, eliminating naming conflicts in multi-vendor environments. Interface transmit power fields now support negative values, providing more accurate representation of optical interface characteristics. The release also includes improvements to image attachments with support for descriptions and a redesigned interface section that makes managing device documentation more intuitive.

API and System Enhancements

NetBox 4.4 includes several API enhancements that improve integration capabilities. The Object Types REST API endpoint has been extended with additional details and moved to the “core” app for better organization.

(Note: the original endpoint has been temporarily maintained for backwards compatibility)

Enhanced Prometheus metrics now include REST and GraphQL API statistics, providing better visibility into NetBox usage patterns and performance characteristics. The system now reports the hostname in the /api/status/ endpoint, improving monitoring and identification capabilities.

Enhanced Documentation and Audit Capabilities

Users can now add comments to changelog entries, providing better audit trails and documentation of why changes were made. This feature addresses a long-standing need for contextual information around network changes, improving compliance and operational understanding.

Config Context Data Validation

The introduction of ConfigContextProfile models enables JSON schema validation for config context data. This enhancement ensures data consistency and reduces configuration errors by validating config contexts against defined schemas whenever changes are made.

User Experience Refinements

The release includes numerous user experience improvements, including customizable CSV delimiter preferences, enhanced system information displays, and the ability to assign contacts to ASNs. These refinements demonstrate our focus on making NetBox more flexible and user-friendly for diverse operational needs.

The Expanding NetBox Ecosystem

While NetBox 4.4 represents significant core platform improvements, it’s part of a much larger, rapidly evolving ecosystem of tools and integrations designed to work together, providing comprehensive power and flexibility for network operations, automation, and management.

NetBox Branching: Evolving Change Management

The NetBox Branching plugin continues to mature, with the NetBox 4.4-compatible version 0.7.0 on the way. Version 0.6.0 introduced significant enhancements including the ability to apply database migrations to open branches and improved policy enforcement mechanisms. These improvements make it even easier for teams to manage network changes with familiar Git-style workflows, ensuring safe and collaborative infrastructure modifications.

Custom Objects: Bridging the Gap

Building on the core infrastructure improvements in NetBox 4.4, we’re preparing for the upcoming NetBox Custom Objects GA. Custom Objects leverages enhanced platform capabilities to bridge the gap between simple custom fields and complex plugin development, offering much of the power of plugins with the ease of use of tags and custom fields. Whether you’re modeling multicast services, application dependencies, or exotic technology stacks, Custom Objects will enable you to create new object types in NetBox without writing a single line of code.

The Power of the NetBox Ecosystem: Why It Matters

One canonical model — NetBox owns intent, Discovery populates facts, Assurance validates reality, AI makes it actionable.

Open & composable — Every component is built on open source foundations with an API-first, integration-focused architecture. Swap parts without lock-in, and extend the data model to meet your organization’s requirements.

Enterprise-ready — Cloud, Enterprise, and self-hosted editions share code and plugins, so you can start free and scale globally.

Relentless velocity — Hundreds of contributors and a dedicated product team ship improvements every week.
