NetBox’s position as the definitive network source of truth continues to strengthen, and as our user community expands, so does the demand for seamless integrations with essential network management platforms. Today, we’re excited to announce the Private Preview of our latest integration: a direct connection between NetBox and SolarWinds IPAM.
SolarWinds IPAM is widely used across enterprise environments for managing dynamic IP address allocation and tracking. Organizations relying on NetBox to document and manage their networks have long sought a more efficient way to integrate with SolarWinds IPAM. This new integration enables network operators to maintain complete visibility of IP space usage across their environments, ensuring consistency between systems and reducing the risks associated with manual data synchronization.
The Challenge of Managing IPAM Across Multiple Systems
For many network teams, NetBox serves as the authoritative source of truth for IP address planning and network design, while SolarWinds IP Address Manager (IPAM) governs dynamic IP address assignment and real-time lease tracking. Without integration between these platforms, teams are often forced to duplicate data manually—introducing inconsistencies, operational drift, and inefficiencies that undermine automation efforts.
A key challenge in modern network operations is maintaining alignment across disparate management systems. When address records become fragmented or outdated, troubleshooting slows and the risk of conflicts grows. This integration eliminates those gaps by synchronizing active address assignments and reservations from SolarWinds IPAM into NetBox, enriching NetBox’s authoritative IPAM model with real-time operational data.
A Shared Authority Approach to Network Operations
Like our recently announced integrations with Juniper Mist, VMware vCenter, Microsoft DHCP, Cisco Catalyst Center, AWS VPC IPAM, Infoblox, and Tenable, this SolarWinds integration embraces a shared authority model. In today’s complex IT ecosystems, no single tool can—or should—control every aspect of the network. Instead, organizations must rely on a distributed approach, where each system specializes in its respective domain while contributing to a cohesive network management strategy.
With this integration, NetBox remains the authoritative system of record for network infrastructure design—prefixes, VRFs, roles, and IPAM intent—while SolarWinds continues to govern the operational reality of address usage and leasing. The integration ensures that dynamically leased, statically reserved, and subnet-assigned IP addresses from SolarWinds are accurately reflected in NetBox. This reduces the risk of overlapping assignments, improves operational visibility, and strengthens coordination between planning and operations teams.
Key Features in Version 1
The first release of the NetBox SolarWinds integration focuses on one-way synchronization of comprehensive IPAM data from SolarWinds into NetBox:
- Complete IP Address Inventory: Import all IP addresses from SolarWinds, including static assignments, dynamic leases, and reserved addresses
- Prefix Synchronization: Import all IPv4/IPv6 subnets from SolarWinds into NetBox Prefix objects
- IP Range Management: Synchronize all IP ranges, including DHCP pools and statically reserved ranges
- Metadata Enrichment: Preserve DNS names, MAC addresses, and descriptive data within NetBox objects
All synchronized data is clearly tagged for easy filtering and management within NetBox, and the integration leverages NetBox Assurance to ensure controlled reconciliation with your existing network model.
